Scent as Catalyst

Dharavi, Mumbai, India

This design proposal focuses on revitalizing Dharavi, one of the largest slums in Mumbai, India, by improving economic vitality and public health. Previous redevelopment efforts have been ineffective due to the unequal distribution of space and resources. This proposal aims to address these challenges by focusing on public spaces and enhancing health, sanitation, and economic value. Dharavi’s dense population and industrial activity have contributed to severe air pollution, further affecting public health and limiting economic development. Therefore, the central design concept revolves around “scent,” using it to sense and manage the urban environment. Odor diffusion holds hidden economic value, while odor isolation can provide environmental benefits. By studying wind patterns, we aim to optimize the area’s spatial structure to improve air circulation and reduce pollution. For each zone, we propose tailored design strategies to address the varying levels of pollution and industrial activity. One example involves adjusting layout and functional divisions to improve odor management and space efficiency, ultimately reducing pollution’s impact on residents’ health and unlocking economic potential. In conclusion, this design seeks to transform Dharavi’s urban space by integrating odor perception with environmental regulation. It aims to improve public health, enhance economic vitality, and contribute to the sustainable redevelopment of the area, ensuring long-term prosperity.
