Invisible Stories in the Richmond Quilt
Richmond, CA
Invisible Stories in the Richmond Quilt explores the fragmented urban edge of Northwest Richmond, where logistics facilities, a detention center, wetlands, and residential neighborhoods sit side by side yet remain disconnected. These boundaries reflect decades of infrastructural layering and uneven development. The project asks: what becomes visible when we reframe these edges as points of connection? By mapping both physical systems and social conditions, the design proposes an “overstitch” strategy—introducing new spatial seams that reconnect isolated patches into a continuous civic landscape.
Three interventions structure the proposal. A logistics edge becomes a learning corridor that links workforce training with public access. The detention boundary is reimagined through framed views and shared civic spaces that restore dignity and visibility. Along the ecological seam, wetlands and neighborhood space are connected into a public landscape focused on stewardship and mobility. Through new pedestrian pathways, layered programs, and carefully framed perspectives, the project transforms infrastructure into a platform for connection, learning, and shared presence.
